Q&A with Judd Mcloughlin, Engineering Manager, Hong Kong Beer Co
Describe a typical day in the life of an Engineering Manager at Hong Kong Beer Co.
Judd: Hong Kong Beer Co has one of the most technologically advanced craft breweries in the world with highly specialized equipment such as an automated brewhouse with AI sensors, pasteurizer, centrifuge, combined CO₂ and O₂ meter, water deaeration system, cellar control system, bottling and kegging machines, and a canning line. I work with the brew team, original equipment manufacturers, and outside contractors to ensure that our brewing operations run smoothly without unplanned downtime events. I also design and implement maintenance and preventive maintenance programs and look for ways to improve process efficiencies.
What is your favourite restaurant or cuisine in Hong Kong?
Judd: My favourite dish is the fried dumplings from Hei Baat Fong in Sheung Wan. Unbelievably good!
What is a “must-do” activity for visitors to Hong Kong?
Judd: Start the day with coffee and breakfast at Fineprint on Peel Street. Then hike up Mount High West to enjoy the incredible 360° views and hike back down to Peel Street for a thirst-quenching Hong Kong Beer Co beer at a craft beer bar. Best day in Hong Kong!
Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what is it?
Judd: Cooking ... Or so I'm told :)
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Judd: I haven't tried karaoke; however, I certainly sing in the shower. This morning, it was "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.
Which season is your favourite?
Judd: I'm a fan of spring ... Emerging from winter, I appreciate the longer days, warmer weather, and best mornings ever.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Judd: The best advice I've received was from my dad the day before I started my first job. He told me, "You reap what you sow," which I interpreted to mean if I worked hard and learned from the outset, I would set myself up for a successful and fulfilling career later. I've since discovered that "reap what you sow" applies to many other things, not just to work. I live by those words.
