Held in September in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, this year's International Beer Cup was judged by 78 certified beer judges from 24 countries. There were 1,215 beer entries (36% from overseas) from 296 breweries in 17 countries, including Australia, Belgium, China, Colombia, Greece, Hong Kong, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Poland, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, United States, and host-country Japan.
Beers were judged in a blind tasting by their appearance, aroma, and flavour per the competition's published Beer Style Guidelines. Only beers assessed as world’s best (gold), outstanding (silver), or excellent (bronze) received medals, with only one gold, silver, or bronze medal up for grabs per beer style.
